As Shanghai acts as China's industrial center, it has many forms of serious air, water, and noise pollution. In the 1950s, one way the city cut back on its pollution was begin the construction of suburban areas, but because of the high population density and continued mixed industrial residential land use, this pollution continued to create problems for the city, and still does today.

Migration Trends
In World War II, Shanghai became a safe zone to jewish refugees from Germany, Austria, and Poland because it allowed anyone to live their without a visa or official paper. The refugees were able to recreate parts of their European life-style in Shanghai by incorporating aspects of their social, religious, and culture activities . Shanghai was taken over by the Maoist Communist in 1949, after most of the jews had left the city. The remaining jews left by 1950, which ended the haven for the jews in East Asia, and a major migration trend for the city of Shanghai.
