In World War II, Shanghai became a safe zone to jewish refugees from Germany, Austria, and Poland. The city allowed anyone to live within its boundaries without a visa or official paper. After the Opium War, the city of Shanghai began to develop into the major trading port it is today. Once China began its economic improvements, Shanghai accomplished rapid sustainable growth. The city's development is dependent on the excelling diversity within its economic base which features tourism, manufacturing, electronics, etc. The metropolis has developed into one of the world's most successful trade ports, and has its own Free Trade Zone.
